BalticSeaH2

solen

Energy Valley joins 40 partners in the Baltic region in demonstrating the hydrogen economy with the first large-scale cross-border Hydrogen Valley in Europe.

BalticSeaH2 pioneers an innovative initiative, establishing a significant hydrogen valley spanning across the Baltic Sea region. Focused on southern Finland and Estonia, the project aims to revolutionize the energy landscape, fostering self-sufficiency and minimizing carbon emissions in various industries. Results from the main valley will be replicated in other regions of the project. With an impressive consortium of 40 partners from nine Baltic Sea area countries, BalticSeaH2 strives to build an integrated, interregional hydrogen economy on an unprecedented scale in Europe.

Through BalticSeaH2, 25 demonstration and investment cases will showcase the diverse applications of hydrogen across multiple sectors, attracting a total investment of over 4 billion euros. By project completion, the production potential for hydrogen is set to reach 100,000 tonnes annually, enabling various industries involved in the project to utilize or sell hydrogen and its derivatives.

Green transition collaboration between Energy Valley and Energy Cluster Denmark

solen

Energy Valley and Energy Cluster Denmark have established a cluster-to-cluster collaboration for expertise and technology exchange, and development of new business opportunities between Norwegian and Danish companies.

Offshore wind and hydrogen are the energy sectors addressed.

The project will run for two years (2023-24) and is funded by Viken Fylkeskommune.

During this time, we will host workshops, matchmaking events, investor meetings and other initiatives.

Increasing academic collaboration with the energy industry

solen

The project is financed by Viken and is a preliminary study to map industrial companies’ needs for access to academic/research resources and how the various academic/research institutions in and around Viken respond to these needs. The main purpose of the project is to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry within the energy technology sector, and in the longer term make it more attractive for new and established energy technology companies to locate and grow in Viken.

Estonia-Norway Visionary Report

Norway and Estonia are small countries but have both demonstrated important capabilities on a global scene. Estonia is a dynamic reformer with the use of digital technologies, and Norway is a major energy producer and maritime nation.

The Russian aggression and full-scale invasion of Ukraine have dramatically changed the security situation in our Nordic-Baltic region. More than ever, close partners and neighbors Estonia and Norway must establish closer cooperation to support the green transition towards an economy based on sustainable and climate-neutral energy.

The Visionary Report will aim to identify best policy practices, untapped business opportunities or possible bottlenecks, and joint research cooperation in the fields of renewable energy and green transition.

solen

Areas in focus

  • Renewable energy technologies, including storage (pumped storage, hydrogen, etc)
  • Social Acceptance of green transition and new energy plants
  • Green transition in the transport sector (promoting electric transport, hydrogen in transport)
  • Management of national resources to increase national welfare (oil and gas in Norway, critical minerals in Estonia)
  • Energy efficiency, including digitalization, demand, and response
  • CCS

Our aim is a more integrated and sustainable Nordic-Baltic region.

The report will be presented before the Norwegian and Estonian prime ministers Jonas Gahr Støre and Kaja Kallas in January 2023 Energy Valley will also organize a Norwegian energy delegation of businesses to go to Estonia in 2023.

The Ocean of Tomorrow

Together with the Viken Technology Cluster and SAMS, Energy Valley has taken the initiative for the project “The Ocean of Tomorrow”. The three clusters complement each other and can facilitate new value propositions and value chains. The starting point for the collaboration is the EU project Horizon 2020 Green Offshore Tech aimed at SMEs.

solen

The purpose is to support innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises and promote the development of the emerging Blue Economy industries through cross-sectoral and cross-border value chains based on common challenges and the deployment of key technologies.

The project will contribute to building new expertise on that which already exists in the three clusters and connect this with the opportunities in the Green Offshore Tech project. The result will be new technology, new products, increased market knowledge, and an increased international network for the cluster companies.

Position Paper

Northern European Alliance for Sustainable Energy has published a position paper, The Northern European Hydrogen Opportunity – to capture the opportunity through cooperation. The paper calls for fast implementation of the hydrogen strategies across Europe and suggests concrete actions to speed up the process.

Renewable hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the clean energy transition for solving the climate challenge. The estimated potential for production in Northern Europe is big enough to enable establishment of carbon-neutral societies in the Northern Europe and beyond. The full utilisation of the clean hydrogen potential also introduces an opportunity to reduce imported carbon through coordinated use of local resources and by implementing sector integration possibilities.

Reaching the full potential of hydrogen economy requires tight cooperation in Northern Europe. This includes pilot and demonstration projects, innovation capacities across borders for all parts of the hydrogen value network, shaping the common operational environment, system-level studies about the role of hydrogen in the future energy and industrial systems, and building competence through training.
