Masterclass Hywind at the SSV Conference

Hywind: The world’s first floating wind farm
Ten kilometers off the south-west coast of Norway, Statoil’s Hywind demo has been putting next generation technology through its paces since 2009—as the world’s first floating offshore wind turbine. Through years of testing, the concept has been verified, and it consistently exceeds performance expectations. With few operational challenges, excellent production output, and well-functioning technical systems the Hywind concept is well positioned to revolutionize the future of offshore wind and is a door opener for completely new renewable energy business opportunities.
In 2015, Statoil made the final investment decision to build the world’s first floating wind farm: The Hywind pilot park offshore Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This marked an important step forward for offshore wind technology, and potentially opens attractive new markets for renewable energy production worldwide.
The commissioning and start-up of the Hywind turbines went quicker than anticipated. The Statoil motion controller, developed and tested during the operation of Hywind Demo, and upscaled to match the 6MW DD turbine functioned as intended. The performance of Hywind Scotland has been above expectation. The production target of 2017 was exceeded. Statoil is now set to conduct the planned technology qualification program, with advanced motion controller functionality testing set to commence spring 2018.
