The World Energy Council is hosting a virtual event on February 24th titled “The role of hydrogen in place-based energy transitions – how to build resilient ‘hydrogen valley’ ecosystems.”
Energy Valley is part of the World Energy Council with its own national member committee, World Energy Council Norway.
The event will delve into the latest developments in technology and systems integration, business case development, and human capital and skills.
With a growing emphasis on renewable energy and sustainability, the role of hydrogen in energy transitions is becoming increasingly important.
The potential of decarbonized hydrogen in energy transitions is much debated and promoted. Many European countries and regions envisage an essential role for hydrogen as part of the energy system – as a fuel technology to decarbonize hard-to-abate industrial processes but also for other applications, including transport and mobility.
Therefore, in many places across Europe, ‘hydrogen valley’ ecosystems are being developed, ie, local hydrogen economies where hydrogen supply is integrated with (local) energy value chains and demand-side uses.
Developing a comprehensive ‘hydrogen valley’ ecosystem requires various aspects to be addressed and managed.
This World Energy Café Europe webinar facilitates a discussion on some of these aspects. A few practitioners involved in developing hydrogen projects from across the European community will be invited to set the scene, after which participants can ‘connect and share’ actively with the presenters and other participants.
The event will provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of building resilient “hydrogen valley” ecosystems, and help to shape the future of energy transitions further.

Meet the speakers who will provide scene-setting presentations.
Arild Selvig is CEO of Z.E.G Power, a company that develops innovative technologies for hydrogen production. Z.E.G Power is based in Norway and is a member of Energy Valley which hosts the Norwegian MC.
“Z.E.G Power is involved in multiple hydrogen projects – nationally and internationally – where we develop applications for hydrogen energy in both onshore and offshore (maritime) settings. Technology development is our main focus but technology of course needs to be integrated into the entire energy value chain. I look forward to sharing our experiences on 24 February!”
Jerneja Sedlar works with HSE, the largest utility company in Slovenia and host of the Slovenian Member Committee.
“As Project Manager, I’m involved in a very exciting project – developing the first cross-border hydrogen valley in Europe, the ‘North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley’ which spans the Autonomous Region of Frullia – Venezia – Guilia in Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. I look forward to telling you more about this interesting project and sharing our (early) experiences in getting it off the ground, during the World Energy Café in Europe on 24 February. Lorenzo Squintani works at the University of Groningen in the north of The Netherlands as a Professor and Director of the Wubbo Ockels School of Energy and Climate.
“The Northern Netherlands is home to the first hydrogen valley that was awarded funding from the EU. An important aspect is the human capital dimension – how can we make sure we educate people with the right skills to work in the new hydrogen economy? That’s why I’m working with partners from industry, government, and other education institutes on our ‘Hydrogen Valley Campus Europe’ project. I’ll tell you more about it on 24 February – and I’m interested to discuss how we might collaborate!”
