Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, Alibaba, and an increasing proportion of the most powerful, fastest growing companies today are operating digital platforms. Enterprises that leverage the power of platform business models have grown dramatically in size and scale over the past decade, totalling a $4.3 trillion market capitalisation.
No longer the sole domain of social media, travel, books or music, platform business models have made inroads into transportation, banking and even healthcare and energy. Platforms are now active in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Platform ecosystems are gaining ground through the digitalization of products, services and businesses processes and are reshaping the global business landscape. Platform competition is exciting and opens up new business opportunities, but it can be brutal, and the power of digital juggernauts awesome. The platform is the new dominant form of organization in the digital age. Crafting platform strategies is therefore becoming an essential skill for business leaders.
